Doolin

Tell me a little about the village.

Doolin is a village on the west coast of Ireland, about an hour's drive away from Shannon airport. It is famous for being a centre for traditional Irish music. In size, it is much smaller than Bouillion and more comparable to Coniston. It is close to the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands and the Burren.

Where's that?

Why do we think Doolin would be good?

The biggest thing Doolin has going for it is that despite it's small size, it has a wide range of accomodation, a suitable venue and most importantly, has years of experience in dealing with large groups of people, thanks to being a centre for Irish traditional music and hosting a large festival every year in February.

A range of pictures of the village and it's surrounds is available here
A map of doolin. The Russell community centre is just across the road from the hostel at Toomullin (approximately at the n of "The Burren Way"). There's a bigger (300dpi) map here.
On the map, the pubs are:

  1. Gus O'Connor's
  2. McGann's
  3. McDermotts
To give you an idea of the scale, the signposts say it's 4km from the Church of the Holy Rosary to the Pier. Rounded up I think :)

Is it good for Doolin?

Yes. Recently tourism figures have dropped off and bookings are lower for next year according to airlines, hoteliers and travel agents. A group of beer-drinking geeks spending all their money in the local economy for a week can only be a good thing :-)
